Buyer's Guide

Artificial Grass Buyer's Guide

How to specify synthetic turf for an import order: matching pile height to the application, reading a construction spec, the safety documentation worth asking for, and how sampling and container shipment work. Written by the TerraVerde export team from the specifications we manufacture to.

1. Start with the application, not the product

Turf that performs well on a balcony fails on a five-a-side pitch, and sports turf is an over-specified, uncomfortable choice for a show garden. Our catalogue is organised by application for this reason:

2. Pile height: the first number on any spec sheet

We manufacture piles from 10 mm to 40 mm. As a working rule:

Pile heightTypical useNotes
10–15 mmDecoration, events, pets, light-traffic areasDense short piles stay upright without infill and are easiest to clean — our Essential Series sits here.
20–30 mmResidential lawns, landscapingThe comfort range for gardens. Our Performance Series adds options such as rubber-backed construction for demanding installs.
40 mmSport systemsDesigned to be used with infill; specify together with the intended sport and any certification target.

Two products with the same pile height can still feel and wear differently — density (stitches per m²), yarn shape and dtex all matter. Those figures are printed on each product page, so compare like for like.

3. Safety and compliance documentation

All TerraVerde turf is manufactured lead-free with UV-stabilised yarn. Depending on your market and application, the paperwork your customs broker or end client may ask for includes:

We state only what we manufacture to; test reports are arranged per order against the standard your market requires, which is how serious importers expect it to work.

4. Sampling and ordering

Every project starts with a cutting: we send physical samples of shortlisted products so you can judge colour, softness and density before committing. Minimum order quantities vary by product and are shown on each product page. Goods ship in rolls by sea container from Ningbo, China.

Frequently asked questions

Which pile height should I choose for pet areas?

10–15 mm soft-touch turf is the usual choice for pets: short dense piles are easy to rinse and dry quickly, and our pet range uses drainage-oriented backing. See the Pet Turf category for current products.

What is recommended for children\x27s play areas?

Dense, soft piles in the 10–20 mm range. For EU projects, buyers typically require EN 71-3 (migration of certain elements) testing for surfaces children play on — request this at order stage and we will arrange testing accordingly.

Is TerraVerde turf lead-free?

Yes. All our turf is manufactured lead-free and RoHS-compliant, with test documentation arranged per order against the standard your market requires.

How long does artificial grass last outdoors?

Service life depends on traffic, climate and installation quality, which is why we quote UV-stabilised yarn rather than a single lifetime figure. High-traffic commercial installs wear faster than ornamental lawns; choosing the right density for the application is the biggest single factor.

Does artificial grass drain water?

Yes — lawn and pet products use perforated backing so rain and rinse water pass through to the base layer. Base preparation (a permeable sub-base) matters as much as the turf itself.

Do I need infill?

Short decorative and pet piles (10–20 mm) are designed to stand without infill. 40 mm sports systems are engineered around infill and are specified together with it — tell us the target sport or standard when you enquire.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ varies by product and is listed on each product page. Mixed-container orders across several turf products are common and we support them.

Can you produce under our own brand (OEM/private label)?

Yes. OEM/ODM production is our standard business model, including customer-specified packaging and labelling.

Can we get samples before ordering?

Yes — physical cuttings of shortlisted products are sent before any production commitment, so colour, softness and density can be judged in hand.

Where is the turf made and how does it ship?

Manufactured in China and exported in rolls by sea container from Ningbo. Your forwarder or ours — both work.
